Hazardous Material

1. Any item or chemical that can cause harm to people, plants, or animals
when released by spilling, leaking, pumping, pouring, emitting, emptying,
discharging, injecting, escaping, leaching, dumping, or disposing into the
environment. (40 CFR 261)

(8) “Hazardous material” means the materials regulated by the U.S. Department
of Transportation that require special handling and controls.
(9) “Hazardous substance” means either a “hazardous material” or “hazardous waste” or both, as defined in these standards and regulations.
(10) “Hazardous wastes” means solid waste or a combination of solid wastes
determined to be hazardous under 24.0814 of this chapter which, because of its quantity, concentration, or physical, chemical, or infectious characteristics may cause, or significantly contribute to, an increase in mortality or an increase in serious irreversible, or incapacitating reversible illness, or pose a substantial present or potential hazard to human health or the environment when improperly treated, stored, transported or disposed of or otherwise managed.
