ASEPA Water Laboratory Receives Full U.S. EPACertification for Drinking Water Microbiological Analysis

Pago Pago, American Samoa — The American Samoa Environmental Protection Agency (AS‑EPA) proudly announces that its Water Laboratory has received full certification from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Region 9 to perform microbiological analysis of drinking water using the Colilert procedure. The certification follows a comprehensive three‑day on‑site evaluation conducted by Michael Spiegel, Chemistry Coordinator for the EPA Region 9 Laboratory.
The evaluation included an in‑depth review of Standard Operating Procedures, Quality Assurance and Quality Control (QA/QC) documentation, record‑keeping systems, laboratory facilities, analytical instruments, and the collection and analysis of water samples. The AS‑EPA Water Laboratory met all required criteria and has been certified through December 2029.
“This certification ensures that our laboratory continues to operate with technical excellence and produces scientifically valid and legally defensible data,” said AS‑EPA Director Edna Noga. “Drinking water and water quality remain among our highest priorities in protecting public health and the environment.”
The AS‑EPA Water Laboratory conducts routine sampling and analysis of drinking water from the American Samoa Power Authority’s (ASPA) distribution lines and wells, village water systems, and water vending machines. The laboratory also analyzes nearshore and stream waters used for recreation to ensure safe water quality conditions for the community.
The certification reflects the dedication and professionalism of the AS‑EPA Laboratory team, which includes acting Laboratory Manager, Josephine Regis and analysts, Aifili Solaita, Salt Toma and Laukau Otuafi.
